Yamazaki 12, yet another wonderful expression from Japan. However this expression immediately reminded me of a full-bodied Speyside… Up until now the style of Japanese whisky I had encountered was characterized by lightness and clarity. This expression challenged my preconceptions with a bold full nose releasing an assertive citrus scent that quickly transitions to a more muted palate.
The palate continues the transition from a light citrus to a more nuanced dark chocolate and toffee. It mellows and languishes expanding throughout the mouth leaving a glycerol coating.
The finish is a continuation of the palate and lingers shortly. Lasting long enough to pick up some of the zest and nuttiness.
Overall this whisky reminds me of a supper clean Speyside, well worth it if you can find it
